Bitcoin surged to its highest price in nearly 20 months while gold hit an all-time peak on Monday, as frenzied investor speculation that interest rates will fall next year rippled through assets across the globe. The cryptocurrency soared to more than $42,000 on Monday, also boosted by optimism that the toughest regulatory punishments for the industry have passed. It later fell back to $41,662, up 7.4 per cent on the previous day. Gold rallied as much as 3 per cent to $2,135 per troy ounce on Monday, a new record, before slipping to $2,025 per troy ounce, according to LSEG data. The moves follow a recent rush into stocks and bonds, fuelled by growing expectations that the Federal Reserve will soon cut borrowing costs despite chair Jay Powell’s assertion on Friday that it was “premature” to conclude that the central bank has won its battle with inflation. “You look at bitcoin and gold and you see a very similar kind of evolution,” said Luca Paolini, chief strategist at Pictet Asset Management. “All the asset classes that tend to do well when the Fed cuts rates aggressively are doing well.” Traders are now betting the first rate reduction could come as soon as March after a sharp decline in government and corporate borrowing costs as US bond markets enjoyed their biggest monthly rally in nearly four decades in November. Lower yields on ultra-safe US Treasury debt have made other assets relatively more attractive to investors. The S&P 500 index closed at its highest level since March 2022 last week, although it was down 0.6 per cent midway through Monday’s session. Recent US economic data has been resilient even while inflation has fallen, further boosting risky assets like stocks. Max Kettner, chief multi-asset strategist at HSBC, said markets were in the grip of an “everyone-is-happy-Goldilocks rally” across “virtually all asset classes”. Traders said the momentum to buy bitcoin, whose value has climbed by more than a fifth in the past month, was also driven by growing interest among investors after the closure of two of the most high-profile criminal cases that had hung over the market for the last year. Last month the US successfully prosecuted Sam Bankman-Fried, former chief executive of FTX, and Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange. Bankman-Fried was convicted of fraud and Binance paid $4.3bn in penalties after pleading guilty to criminal charges related to money laundering and financial sanctions breaches. But despite many traders’ fears, US authorities did not shut down Binance. Binance continues to face a separate lawsuit from the Securities and Exchange Commission for allegedly violating securities laws.

Ethereum, the second most actively traded cryptocurrency, also rose 8.3 per cent to $2,260 on Monday, its highest level since May last year. Investors are also hopeful the SEC will approve an exchange traded fund for bitcoin in coming weeks. The SEC has refused for a decade to approve spot bitcoin ETFs, stock market funds that invest directly in the cryptocurrency. Some of Wall Street’s largest investors, including BlackRock and Franklin Templeton, have joined companies such as VanEck and WisdomTree in submitting filings with the SEC.

The market has long viewed spot bitcoin ETFs as a way to wrest control of digital assets from scandal-ridden crypto groups in favour of mainstream businesses such as BlackRock. “ETF speculation is going to continue to drive behaviour in the crypto market this week as investors buy into the narrative of the transformative impact opening the market to institutional investors will have on the ecosystem,” said Simon Peters, market analyst at eToro. While the SEC has embarked on a year-long crackdown on crypto — including enforcement actions against groups such as US-listed exchange Coinbase — pressure is growing on the regulator to approve a bitcoin spot ETF. Crypto asset manager Grayscale scored a watershed legal victory this year when a federal appeals court ruled the SEC was wrong to reject its application to convert its flagship Grayscale Bitcoin Trust into an ETF.

19:46 Patrick Kane to sign deal with Red Wings, sources say

Patrick Kane is signing a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

Kane, who spent the first 16 years of his NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks before a trade to the New York Rangers last spring, is six months out from hip resurfacing surgery. The nine-time All-Star has met with a handful of teams over the past month, including his hometown Buffalo Sabres, the Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins.

According to sources, Kane narrowed his focus and was down to two Eastern Conference teams in the final week of his decision.

Kane, 35, relocated his family to Toronto to rehab from the surgery over the past six months. Dr. Edward Hsu performed the hip resurfacing, and Ian MacIntyre oversaw Kane's rehab. In Toronto, Kane skated with former NHL player Cody Hodgson, who helped him with battle drills and fed him pucks.

According to several sources, Kane was asked on Zoom meetings by general managers and coaches why he wanted to put his body through the grueling rehab process, especially for a surgery with little proof of concept in the NHL, and his answer was repeatedly: "Because I love the game."

Kane showed humility through the process, sources said, constantly saying he knew he needed "to earn my spot," and saying he didn't expect to play on a team's first line or first power-play unit.

Kane has 1,237 points in 1,180 games during his NHL career, fourth-most among active players. His 451 career goals is the sixth-most among active players.

In the end, according to sources, Kane was impressed by Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde's X's and O's hockey acumen and vision for the team. The move also gives Kane a chance to reunite with one of his favorite Chicago linemates, Alex DeBrincat.

Throughout the rehab process, Kane was in touch with other athletes who had hip resurfacing, including Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom, who recently stepped away from the game, as well as tennis star Andy Murray.

The Red Wings are in a seven-year playoff drought, but they are starting to show signs of progress in the rebuild. As of Tuesday, Detroit is in third place in the Atlantic Division with an 11-6-3 record.

The NHL All-Star Weekend is returning to its roots -- and bringing back an old favorite.

When the showcase lands in Toronto this February, it'll be as an expanded three-day event with NHL All-Star Thursday added ahead of the usual Friday skills competition and Saturday All-Star Game. The highlight of its Thursday festivities will be the league's first All-Star player draft in nearly a decade, with four All-Star captains -- and their celebrity captain partners -- drafting teams for Saturday's contest live in front of fans at Scotiabank Arena.

Following the draft, which begins at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, Feb. 1, the NHL will hold a tribute ceremony honoring members of the 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs and then stage a 3-on-3 event with the Professional Women's Hockey League.

There is also a completely revamped skills format for Friday to come.

The NHL had been thinking about refreshing its All-Star Weekend for years. It has held three previous player drafts between 2011 and 2015 but in recent years have iced more traditional division-based tournaments.

This time around, the league's host city of Toronto provided the perfect backdrop to finally roll out a few changes.

"It's a hockey-crazed crowd up there that just wants more and more," said Steve Mayer, the NHL's Chief Content Officer. "We'd bantered around other ideas and just decided, 'Let's see whether we can add an extra day.' We held the player draft years ago and it was good, but we drifted away from it. And over the course of the last few years, we've talked about it returning just as an added piece to the weekend. And we have also heard from our players and our fans that, 'Hey, wouldn't it be interesting if we brought it back?' We think it just adds to the overall week of activities for All-Star, and it's something that if it works out, it'll be here to stay."

Mayer said the league will determine its four All-Star captains based on their celebrity pairing. The NHL is targeting "passionate hockey fans" for those roles, some of whom may already have existing relationships with certain players or ties to a particular club. Together, the captains will pick from the pool of available All-Stars until there are four left; a special guest will then assign those players to their respective teams.

There will still be a fan vote element as well beginning in early January, where fans can select 12 players to compete in the All-Star Game. The league will announce its player and celebrity captains in January, too. The hope is to enliven the whole event with some unpredictable and amusing partnerships.

"That dynamic [of player and celebrity] this time around is going to be really fun, very unique," Mayer said. "We're looking for humor in these events, we're looking to bring out the player personality, we're looking at something that is going to be memorable. We've learned from doing it in the past."

Hockey fans are likely to recall how Phil Kessel -- then a member of the Maple Leafs -- was picked last in the NHL's inaugural "Fantasy Draft" at the 2011 All-Star Game in Raleigh, North Carolina. Then the league decided its last man standing deserved a car at the next player draft, encouraging Washington Capitals' star Alex Ovechkin to beg not to be chosen so he could take home some new wheels.

It's that sort of energy the NHL is hoping to tap into again.

"The player personality comes out in an event like this," Mayer said. "They're talking, they're either raising their hand to be picked or putting their hand down so they wouldn't get picked by certain teams. You've got all these great dynamics of a draft with former teammates, current teammates, friends from growing up. It's a pretty cool opportunity for players to draft people that they know and build their own team."

Mayer said the NHL solicited feedback from the players' association about how to upgrade the All-Star Weekend experience for players themselves. Tapping back into the draft only made sense -- especially considering one of its original creators happens to be Maple Leafs president and alternate governor Brendan Shanahan.

Shanahan was working for the league in 2011 when he and fellow former NHLer Rob Blake came up with the idea of a player fantasy draft. When Toronto agreed to take on the All-Star Game this year, it only made sense to revive the player draft, too.

"It was originally thought of as bringing hockey back to its roots and letting the players pick the teams," Shanahan said. "We all remember playing road hockey and standing in a big group and having a couple of guys starting to pick teams and how that created fun and anxiety for people doing the picking and people being picked. The motivation behind it was just having a little bit of fun and asking the players to sort of go back to their roots. Sometimes, [All-Star Weekend] is in a warm-weather place [which guys like], but I also think when you have an opportunity to go to an Original Six city and celebrate the game's history, that's important too."

The league will spotlight Toronto's background with its ceremony acknowledging the 1967 Leafs. Every living member of that team -- the last to win a Stanley Cup in Toronto -- is expected to be in attendance, and Mayer expects an "emotional" response from the crowd. And from there, the NHL was eager to give the newly formed PWHL a standalone 3-on-3 showcase of its own this year as opposed to just including a few players in the mix Friday or Saturday.

The NHL skills competition is also going through a revamp, with details still being firmed up. The events themselves will veer closer to hockey skills rather than some recent competitions like the dunk tank at last year's NHL All-Star Game in South Florida. There's also expected to be a greater emphasis on superstar players during the evening.

"Part of the skills changes are after conversations with our players. We don't want to just assume that we're good," Mayer said. "We always feel like we can be better. So, we talked to the players, we talked to the fans, we're talking to our broadcasters, we get a lot of input. We don't need to make changes for the sake of changing but sometimes it just feels right, especially when you've done something for [so many] years in a row. And this year it just felt right. They're not dramatic changes; they're subtle changes that at the end of the day, we think will improve the event."

"The NHL is responding to feedback from players," Shanahan said. "From what I've heard, I think players around the league have provided [their thoughts] and I think part of just the excitement is that they will have had a hand in helping redesign the All-Star Game itself."

Mayer gives credit to the league's team behind the scenes for brainstorming and ultimately creating a reimagined All-Star Weekend that it is confident players and fans will embrace.

"We're not sitting on our laurels. We're always looking to be better, we're always looking to be a little more interesting," Mayer said. "You're going to see a general theme and that is an added Thursday night, a new skills format, the game now will be different because it's not just going to be the division against division, but these teams that we draft against each other. It just gets us all fired up. We're enlivened by all these format changes."

Tickets to NHL All-Star Thursday will be available via Ticketmaster starting Tuesday, December 5th at 10 a.m. ET.

20:56 Carolina Panthers fire head coach Frank Reich

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper fired coach Frank Reich on Monday, less than 24 hours after the owner left the locker room muttering an expletive following Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans in Nashville.

Reich's tenure at Carolina ended with an NFL-worst 1-10 record -- including an 0-6 mark on the road. He also becomes the first NFL head coach since the 1970 merger to be fired in back-to-back seasons after last year's dismissal from the Indianapolis Colts.

"I met with Coach Reich this morning and informed him that he will not continue as head coach of the Carolina Panthers," Tepper said in a statement. "I want to thank Frank for his dedication and service, and we wish him well."

Special teams coach Chris Tabor has been appointed as interim head coach, while offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will assume playcalling duties with help from senior assistant Jim Caldwell.

Tepper has scheduled a news conference for 10:30 a.m. ET Tuesday. There will be no team availability Monday.

According to ESPN Stats & Information research, there have only been six NFL head coaches since the merger who didn't finish their first season with their team, with three of those instances having come in the past three seasons: Urban Meyer (Jaguars), Nathaniel Hackett (Broncos) and Reich.

Reich was fired after the offense produced 15 or fewer points for the fifth straight week and seventh time in 11 games.

The offense produced only 10 points in each of the past two games after Reich reclaimed the playcalling duties from Brown only three games after turning them over to him.

"What are you going to do?'' Reich, who has a career record of 41-43-1, said after Sunday's loss to the Titans. "You are 1-10. Are you going to feel sorry for yourself? Is there something that is going to magically fix everything? No."

After Sunday's game, Tepper left the locker room shaking his head in disgust and was heard by multiple reporters yelling "F---!''

The Panthers are assured of a sixth straight losing season since Tepper bought the team in 2018 for $2.275 billion. Since then, the Panthers are 30-63 (.323) -- second-worst only to the New York Jets.

Sunday's performance left the Panthers 30th in the NFL in total offense and 30th in passing yards per game.

That didn't bode well for Reich, who was hired in January for his offensive prowess.

Reich also was hired to bring along rookie quarterback Bryce Young, the No. 1 pick of the 2023 draft after Carolina traded two first-round picks and wide receiver DJ Moore to Chicago Bears to move from ninth to first.

Young ranks 29th in the NFL in Total QBR with a rating of 32.0. He also ranks near the bottom of the league in passer rating at 74.9 and has been sacked 40 times, tied for the fifth most for a player through his first 10 games since sacks were first tracked in 1963.

Carolina fans have been so disgusted that in two homes games -- Minnesota and Dallas -- they sold enough of their tickets to fans from the visiting team to make Bank of America Stadium look like a home game for them.

All that didn't sit well with Tepper and left Reich to be fired in-season for the second straight year after he was dismissed in 2022 by the Colts after a 3-5-1 start.

This is the second consecutive year Tepper has fired his head coach in-season. Matt Rhule was fired last year after a 1-4 start.

Tepper and his search committee targeted Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson early in their search. When Johnson notified teams he was staying in Detroit, the search turned to Reich because of his history with offenses, his ability to help a rookie quarterback grow and his promise to build a veteran staff.

He was signed to a four-year deal in January.

Reich went to four Super Bowls as a player with the Buffalo Bills, where he was primarily a backup. As a coach, he won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles after the 2017 season in which he was the offensive coordinator.

In 2017, Reich helped Carson Wentz go 11-2 with MVP-caliber numbers before a season-ending injury, and Nick Foles become the Super Bowl MVP in a 41-33 victory against the New England Patriots.

He also worked with future Hall of Fame quarterback Philip Rivers with the then-San Diego Chargers and the Colts.
